This is a bit of fanart for Avatar, the Last Airbender. Specifically of Zuko, age fourteen, about a week after the Agni Kai. It’s sorta based on a fanfic I’m thinking about writing, but probably won’t because I have so many other things to do. Basically, Zuko wakes up in the infirmary after the duel (having passed out in the arena). His sister waltzes in and tells him the burn doesn’t look so hideous when he’s hiding behind his hair. Then she tells him Ozai wants to see him in the war room. Zuko goes, and receives his sentence to comb the world for the avatar, and don’t come back without him. It’s fairly obvious that what Ozai really means is, “Don’t come back.” Iroh, horrified by all this and not sure Zuko will be able to keep it together alone, requests to accompany him on his mission. Since the actions of a retired general don’t matter in the slightest, Ozai tells him to do whatever he wants. Zuko, still in shock, locks himself in his room on his ship and doesn’t show his face for days, while Iroh sets about recruiting a few guys and getting the ship out of Fire nation territory. Eventually, Zuko looks at himself in the mirror and reflects on everything that’s gone down. He decides that, rather than lay down and die, he’s going to surprise everyone by actually finding this avatar and bringing him home. That’s when he shaves his head, as a symbol, deciding to wear the scar proudly, until his quest is over. The crew finally meets Zuko, now the severe, obsessed young man of A:TLA seasone one, and they head off for the southern air temple as a starting point.
*Looks up at huge description* Hehe. Well, I guess this submission is half art, half fanfic.
Anyway, about the art itself. This was done with OpenCanvas, with color layers and texture layers. The effect is cool but a little less refined than I had intended. Ah well. I don’t know if I like the gesture or not. I guess he’s a lefty in this one. I do love how his uniform turned out, however.
All in all, this was a pain in the butt!! But worth it. *is finally done, so passes out*
Excellent job on the clothes! He looks very determined

I laugh in the face of Death! ... Maybe not laugh...more like a quiet snicker. And I wouldn't do it directly in Death's face, so it's more like a quiet snicker behind Death's back.
I love the subtle textures in this! And it really looks like he's focusing on his reflection. I bow before thy awesomeness.

Heehee! Thanks! Actually, the pose I got from a photo (though not entirely), and that helped alot with the tilt of the head and such. Things always go so much better when I use reference.

Across the globe, 27 million men, women, and children live in some form of slavery. That is more people at this moment than in all the centuries of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Something must be done. This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
